EFDEMIN'S ALBUM CHICAGO - OUT NOW ! !
CD / LP 021 (Dial Records / Berlin)
distribution by Kompakt

PRESS VOICES
Resident Advisor:
In fact, if Efdemin was one of 2007's most artfully crafted LPs, it's hard not to hear CHICAGO as even more carefully structured and considered. It's a work of almost symphonic presence, and one, quite frankly, from which it might be hard to tease an effective standalone single. Each track's a minor phase or movement intimately linked with those around it. (...)
Perhaps Efdemin and Pantha du Prince are now doubly paired, both atop 2010.

Debug:
There is no Lohn&Brot, no Bergwein, no real hit on CHICAGO. But you can't make an album warmer, more complex, stranger, more intelligent, spacy and cool than this one!
Groove:
Sollmann loves Clubs. And their conventions. But in spite of that he sometimes imagines a different room. A room that is created by his music, where the rules are quite the opposite. There would be more space for the unexpected. CHICAGO is like opening a window, letting fresh air in and closing it again. It's bulid like other housemusic aswell - in a grid. But a grid with endless little outlooks.
Frieze:
The recent techno albums which resonated most strongly were ones that worked outside of a traditional club context. Chicago (2010), a new album by the Berlin techno producer Efdemin (Phillip Sollmann), works on a dancefloor, but even better as music for quiet reflection and late-night contemplation. Sollmann, who has a formal background in computer music, cites the Minimalist composer La Monte Young as a major influence and routinely performs in music events, such as the Elektroakustischer Salon at the legendary Berlin techno club Berghain.

Interview with Aram Lintzel:
Sollmann himself is calling it ‚musical brainstorming'. Before he started to record the album, he had to open some locks and bare a few layers. And this is why the new Efdemin tracks sound on it's face like cool techno and house but underneath the surface there are vibrating sediments from samples, seducing synth layers, recorded talking and instruments like organ, zither and cello, which Sollmann played himself. And there is a lot of drumming. They buckle the tracks and at the same time cause this enjoyable spacy atmosphere, that sounds like Theo Parrish, the great stumple-house procucer.
